#JuliaLang Anime Character Project Established!

Hi there,

I decided to establish a #JuliaLang Anime Character (Japanese "kawaii" taste cartoon design).

fig 1: Sample picture: Mecha Lady Shogi's mascot character.
May be same designer will be designing #JuliaLang
new anime character! This girl wear the sailor costume
(ordinal high school girl's uniform in Japan).
Background yellow piece is Shogi (Japanese Chess) piece(Knight).

So I'd like to hear the voices around globe that which design specification
(costume, etc.) is appropriate for new #JuliaLang anime character.

Please feel free to post comments below (may be anyone can post the comments).

Best Regards,

 Takeshi KIMURA

  1. Hello Takeshi,
I'm really fond of these things. In particular, i love shogi, programming languages, mascots and AI.
Since Julia is basically a scientific programming language (if I intended well, never tried it), I'd go with glasses and labcoat. However, she shouldn't be an archetypal clumsy "meganekko": it's better to put on her a resolute facial expression. Since Mechajyo has short brown hair, Julia should have long blond l hair to differentiate her from the former. Julia is not a "very Japanese" name (in fact, it has a Roman origin, at least), so I think blond hair is adequate. She'll be less traditional and more "international".
Some times ago I tried (and failed) to make Heike Bruhns, a musical artificial intelligence (a totally automatic composition program). Despite that, I successfully created a mascot for "her". Heike design could inspire you, I created the concept while a Chilean artist drew it for me :

    there's also a full-fledged version:

If you also need a concept song for "her", I'd suggest "Julia" by Pavlov's Dog, an american progressive rock band from '70. Progressive rock is considered a musical genre for intellectuals, however "Julia" is a catchy and suggestive rock ballad:

PS. I know there are some pins of Mechajyo on Rakuten, since I found them while searching for shogi equipment. However they are quite difficult to get from that marketplace: many Rakuten sellers, i.e. Shogi, require EMS shipping. I really can't pay 2300 yen shipping fee for a 200 yen pin XD If I were able to buy them more easily I'd support your "Mechajyo" buying some merchandise. I'd suggest you to put your Mechajyo concept design on Zazzle, so everyone could make buttons, shirt and cups with it, and you'd get the royalties.
PPS. Is there a way to make Mechajyo work over a linux OS? Not very fond of Win8..

Cheers, Mauro L R Pesce (Italy)

  2. Hi Mauro!

Thank you for your kindness reply and I happy to read your comment.
As you know that "Mechajyo" is wearing sailor costume, and "Julia-tan" is wearing "Ninja" costume, so the directions of both characters differ.
I love both character very much. But I know glass-less "Julia-tan" is more suitable for western people's insights.

As you mentioned in your PS that "Mechajyo" pins in Rakuten store is difficult to get from the foreign countries (=outside japan) and I agree with you that very well.
This pin badge is not intended for selling for foreign people, and even Japanese, It's difficult to purchase because of large shipment fee.

Your suggestion of buying "Mechajyo" in Zazzle, is really new idea and I'd like to consult it to lady shogi professionals (=who possess Mechajyo's design rights).

And second question, Mechajyo of Linux version, is available via GitHub!

    https://github.com/kimrin/WCSC23

There is no English descriptions about WCSC23, but there is a kindness Japanese install instruction.

Despite of you didn't read Japanese, you may understand what you should do by their command line instructions. Have fun!

  3. Hi Takashi :)
when I wrote my comment I was not aware that the concept for Julia was already decided. I discovered that later. In fact, I reached this page just a couple of hours since I had gained knowledge of the existence of Mechajyo (because of the Mechajyo pin on Rakuten). However it seems I was quite prophetic, I got at least three things right about Julia design!
Thank you very much for the github link. I'm pretty sure I'll manage to make Mechajyo work properly even if I can't read kanji ;)
I wish you successful and fruitful work, all the best,
    Mauro PESCE.

PS. Please don't underestimate the interest that some "very Japanese things" may generate among Westerners. Many of us are simply "not aware" of what happens there, in Japan. Cool things there would probably become cool even here, once they are "discovered": I.e., Yamaha and Crypton people thought Vocaloids ( you know, the vocal synth program and related mascots) would have never become popular outside Japan. However they were wrong, and Vocaloids are now becoming more and more popular in US (Miku Hatsune opening the concert of Lady Gaga) and even here in Europe. People here don't care if they sing (mostly) in japanese.

  4. Hi Mauro:)

Sorry for delayed reply (It was a first week of my new company).
I think it's very nice that foreign people are interested in various things in Japan.
Especially Hatsune Miku is an icon of recent Japanese culture: It's cute, and "kawaii".

I apologize that if you feel I underestimated of your interest for Japanese.
I actually don't know the impression of Japan, from point of view of EU people.
So I'd like to know more about that.
